A picture has a special visual appeal that strikes eye vision. A visual representation in 2D drawings is not as effective as a 3D model representation; however, the latter is slightly difficult to sketch. Computer software has made the task of 3D rendering very simple and quick. Architects, engineers and designers can now represent structures and objects that have not come into existence. Yet, the representation is so complete and realistic that it is at par with the actual photograph of the imaginary structure or object.
2D computer graphics are digital images that are computer-based. They consist of 2D geometrical models, such as image compositions, pixel art,digital art, photographs and text. 2D graphics are used in printing and drawing.
3D representation of geometric data is used in 3D computer graphics. Using special software, the data is manipulated by computers. The display, movements and appearance can be manipulated and customized. The result of 3D computer graphics is 3D models. Greater the number of pictures or photographs you have of one person, object etc. better will be the3D model.
Extrude tool: In case you have only one picture you can use the extrude tool for converting it into a 3D model. A picture is in one plane and has only two axes. With the extrude tool, you can add the third axis. Thus, you can add the effect of volume to the picture based on a specific algorithm. The tool is easily available in CAD software or even in SketchUp, Blender or Meshmixer.
Smoothie 3D: This software helps you to replicate the 2D picture symmetrically so that it looks like a model with depth. It is a ffree online software.
Photogrammetry: in this technique, you need to select a number of points in space from a number of photographs. The photographs ( around 10 to 20) must be taken from different angles. When the photos are uploaded in the photogrammetry software, it generates the 3D model.
It is difficult to convert several photographs into 3D model if they are clicked at different times and places. For converting from 2D drawings to 3D models, you must follow some rules while taking pictures.
- Keep the object in a raised position so that you can take the pictures from all angles.
- Cover the object from top to bottom and left to right.
- Take minimum 30 to 40 snaps if you want a detailed model.
- Control light variations while taking the photographs.
- Set off your objects by placing a newspaper on the background, making it easier for your software.
- Make the picture as precise as possible.
